Northern Illinois University has received the inaugural Top Colleges for Innovation Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, the nation’s longest-running publication advancing best practices in higher education. NIU will be featured in the June 2026 issue of the magazine.
The award recognizes colleges and universities where innovation is embedded in their vision, strategy and measurable impact. Through creativity and transformative initiatives, award winners are reimagining teaching, learning, research, support systems and administrative practices to better serve the evolving needs of students, employees and the changing demands of today’s workforce.

NIU was selected because innovation is central to its identity, including its vision to be an engine to advance social mobility. Innovation is a key part of NIU’s formula to advance student success in and out of the classroom, along with faculty success across teaching, scholarship, and engagement.
“We are energized by the potential of our future innovations at NIU and are striving to reach new frontiers, integrating AI across the curriculum, and discovering new ways to improve lives through cutting-edge technologies,” Elish-Piper said. “Setting us apart in the higher education landscape is how we make these innovations accessible, including to the more than half of NIU students who are the first in their family to attend college.”
Innovation is at the forefront at NIU. The university supports transdisciplinary research to solve the world’s biggest problems through over a dozen active centers and institutes, along with active participation from every college. NIU is home to world class research facilities, from wet labs to two high-performance computing clusters to virtual reality labs to a semi-conductor clean lab.
This spirit of innovation extends directly into how NIU prepares students for life beyond graduation. NIU approaches career readiness as a four-year retention strategy instead of an exit service. Innovations such as the UNIV 301/Braven partnership and career accelerator course help students land strong first jobs, and the 71 North Partnership Studio fosters Day One professional self-efficacy through innovation activities, entrepreneurship and professional skills development. The De La Vega Innovation Lab is a collaboration hub that connects students, alumni, faculty and external partners in innovation and entrepreneurial pursuits. Within the lab, students from across campus can engage in collaborative and creative processes and find the resources they need to accelerate business or innovative ventures.
Supporting these efforts is a coordinated, holistic model of student success. NIU’s coaching approach, operationalized through the Registration Promotion Action Team, coordinates academic, financial and social support across several divisions. This structure reduces administrative overlap, ensures students receive guidance from the appropriate office, and reinforces an ethic of care.
