Do you want to educate yourself on the importance of understanding Black History and how to make a positive impact on society? The virtual reality experience “Traveling While Black” is a great place to start to fully immerse yourself in various interactions that those of color had to face in the United States.
This experience portrays the restrictions faced by Black Americans during the Jim Crow era and beyond, and the trials and tribulations that Black individuals have experienced while traveling in this country. After you go through this experience, you will have a better picture of the struggles African Americans had and still go through to this very day.
Not only will this app aid in understanding the inequalities that many faced years ago, but also facilitate conversation about the importance of making a difference in society today when it comes to inclusion and diversity. This app is a documentary that is based on “The Green Book”, a book published for people of color on the road with ways that they could travel safely. This experience will put you in various cities of the United States and is narrated from multiple perspectives, each bringing unique insight on what they had to go through.

Experience It Yourself
The experience lasts 20 minutes. During this time, you will learn about various eye-opening situations involving inequities, which range anywhere from city & bus riots to the heartbreaking account of Samaria Rice, whose 12-year-old son Tamir was wrongfully killed by police in 2014.
This app can be emotional as it deals with some very sensitive topics, but is extremely rewarding as it deepens your understanding of Black History while also promoting the conversation about equality today. You will walk away from this experience feeling educated on racial inequalities, and be better prepared to talk about the injustices faced by people of color in the past and today.
